IRS: Preparer Sought $150M in Refunds

 A New Jersey tax preparer has been accused of seeking more than $150 million in unmerited refundsfrom the Internal Revenue Service.

An indictment alleges Leon Haynes of Teaneck, N.J., filed more than 1,600 fraudulent tax returns for himself and clients claiming Covid-19-related employment tax credits.assisting in the preparation of false tax returns, five counts of mail fraud, one count of aggravated identity theft and two counts of tax evasion. 

Haynes and his clients allegedly received $40 million in refunds based on the returns he filed. He allegedly collected a percentage of tax refunds as a fee with many clients paying Haynes in cash at his request.

Hayes is also accused of receiving tax refund checks totaling $1,428,592 based he submitted relating to his businesses
