IRS Online Preparer Registration Opens

IRS logoWASHINGTON -The Internal Revenue Service has opened the online system under which paid tax preparers must obtain a Preparer Tax Identification Number. That move came as the IRS also issued its final regulations regarding the ID for those who prepare all or substantially all of a tax return.

Preparers can access the online system through the Tax Professionals page of the IRS Web site at www.IRS.gov. Those who already have a PTIN must still apply but will usually be assigned the same number.

Applicants must pay a $64.25 fee each for the ID, which will be valid for one year. From that amount, IRS will receive $50 per user, and an outside vendor that is operating the system and providing customer report will receive the other $14.25. The PTIN will be issued immediately after successful registration. A paper application can also be submitted on Form W-12, IRS Paid Preparer Tax Identification Number Application.

A toll-free telephone number, (877) 613-PTIN has been established for those requiring technical support in using the online system.
