BNA Expands State Tax Research

BNA logoBNA has released a new state tax research service, called the Premier State Tax Library, that offers analysis from practitioners organized by state and topic. The expanded state tax library also represents an important increase in emphasis on sales and use taxes as BNA has introduced a practice navigator and sales and use tax monitor and plans the launch of a sales-and-use tax nexus tool next year.

"This is a major enhancement to our product," says George Farrah, executive editor of BNA Tax & Accounting. Besides providing news and commentary, the library offers research tools such as chart builders, a news tracker and a rate finder.

The library is built on several existing elements, including expert commentary in its state tax portfolios and state tax digests. The major addition is the Sales & Use Tax Navigator, which ties together tax roles, practitioner-authored explanations and primary source materials. It was written by Chicago-based CPA firm Ryan. In the news and commentary area, the new Sales & Use Tax monitor offers daily news on all sales taxes developments, including changes in tax rates.

The biggest changes came in the practice tools area with the introduction of two chart builders, and a sales-and-use tax rate finder. Farrah says by using the Sales & Use Tax Chart Builder customers can select states to create comparison charts for topics such as tax rates, tax base and tax on services. These can be filtered and sorted by topic and jurisdictions. Also new is a Corporate Income Tax Chart Builder which accomplishes the same graphical comparisons of subjects such as tax rates, apportionment, filing requirements and penalties.

The Web-based Sales & Use Tax Rate Finder provides rates for more than 58,000 U.S. taxing jurisdiction with real-time updates. It enables users to look up and schedule automatic delivery of rates. It can immediately identify rates that have changed.
