Mother, Daughters, Sentenced in ID Theft


DOJ logoA mother and two daughters in Montgomery, Ala., who were involved in using stolen identities to preparer phony tax returns, have drawn prison sentences. Barbara Murry and her daughters Yolanda Moses and Veronica Temple each drew a 57-month sentence and were ordered to pay restitution of $1.9 million. Douglas Murry received a 24-month sentence and was order to pay $142,038.


Three other individuals, Lee Moses, Jeffrey Temple and Courtney Johnson, were placed on probation while Almetta Johnson was sentenced to eight months home detention. The Justice Department did not detail relationships of the other individuals to Murry and her daughters, other than to state they were from the same family.

The group was charged with directing refunds of more than $1.9 million from 900 phony tax returns to be deposited in accounts they controlled between January 2006 and April 2012 But it was Barbara Murry, who owned B&B Weaving Shop, and her daughters, who ran the B&B Tax Service in the same building that obtained stolen identifies. The justice department said many of the victims were 16- and 17 years old. Murry and her daughters recruited individuals, including Douglas Murry, to open accounts for this use.

All of the defendants had pleaded guilty to charges. Barbara Murry pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States and one count of aggravated identity theft. Douglas Murry pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States and one count of aggravated identity theft. Lee Moses and Jeffrey Temple both pleaded guilty to one count of filing. Charges against the Johnsons were not detailed, other than the public statement talked of co-conspirators.
