Siempre Tax, the tax services chain for Spanish-speaking taxpayers, has grown to more than 150 locations this year, compared to 57 a year earlier, according to John T. Hewitt, president of Liberty Tax Services. Liberty started the Siempre chain late in 2014. The company said the growth came from signing new franchisees and existing operators who opened additional stores.

"We are striving to become a pillar in the Hispanic community," Hewitt said in a recent earnings webcast. Franchise owners can open both Liberty and Siempre locations in their territories. Hewitt said territories with a Hispanic population of more than 30 percent of the total are likely to have both.

Liberty expects to expand the number of relationships with retail chains that are willing to lease locations for kiosks. That includes Dolex, which operates a national chain of storefronts that provide money transfer services to Latinos. The company has 530 stores in the United States and Puerto Rico.

The company has also 700 Hispanic Certified Liberty offices under a program that began seven years ago. Those must have bilingual preparer. Hewitt also noted that in contrasting with English-speaking customers, the Spanish-speaking ones come to the tax stores year round.

"Those customers are demanding other services," he says. That includes acquring an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. ITINs are is issued to undocumented residents who are not qualified to receive a Social Security number, but must file tax returns.

Liberty's marketing VP Martha O'Gorman says Hispanic offices will be offering services such as passport photos and drivers license assistance and money transfers. "We are also planning on doing citizenship classes and English as a second language classes in the near future," she says.
