The rather nebulous difference between a blog and a website might not be worth discussing. A blog is more dynamic than a website as blogs generally imply some kind of the ability of the reader or visitor to post comments about a site's content. But there is one place the difference is important and that is tone.

Blogs are less formal; often chatty. The difference hits journalists all the time as many more "with it" pages have blogs and not traditional press sections where official announcements are posted.

There's more going on here than just bemoaning change, however. And it's that chatty nature of the blog that's the problem. Posting news to a blog tends to water it down, just by leaving some element suggesting that's it is opinion, not an official statement of the organization.

If this were only a problem for the press, readers could dismiss this complaint. But this is about tone and differences in tone in communication can have a huge impact. The kind of tone adopted can be the difference in making a sale or not or in attracting the right clientele.

Blogs are great and I think that the freedom they provide in communication is valuable. However, there's still a place for stating an organization's stand and for clearly delineating events from opinion and commentary.
